10 Top Benefits of Green Tea, Plus a How-to Guide

Why, oh why did I not start using this sooner? Green tea is loaded with nutrients which benefit your body inside and out. Extracted from the budding leaves of the Camellia sinesis plant, green tea has been found to be beneficial for both consumption and topical usage. It improves brain function, reduces the risk of cancer, lifts your spirits and gives you energy.

Green tea is naturally caffeinated, however you can find decaf, if you’d like. After looking into it, the decaffeination process is perfectly safe and only takes out a few of the antioxidative polyphenols. If you stick with the caffeine, you’ll notice that you don’t get the same jittery effect that one may have after consuming the same amount of coffee.

  1. It’s an antioxidant: Green tea is rich in polyphenols that provide antioxidant activity and anti-cancer protection. Polyphenols make up nearly 30 percent of green tea by weight. The antioxidants found in green tea can help calm inflammation and reduce the effects of sun damage.
  2. Improves circulation: Flavonoids, are plant chemicals found in green and black teas. Flavonoids, have been found to improve vascular health. Good microcirculation can help with the removal of toxins, improve blood flow, and the support transport of nutrients. Skin that is well hydrated and nourished with oxygen will have better elasticity, texture, and overall tone.
  3. Anti-carcinogenic: Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is one of the active constituents of green tea believed to be responsible for its many health and appearance benefits, both orally and topically. EGCG, a polyphenol, can reduce the formation of free radicals in the body, protecting cells and molecules from cancer-causing damage.
  4. Decreases puffiness: Reduce puffy eyes and dark circles by placing a cool, brewed green tea bag over each eye. The caffeine in green tea decreases puffiness by shrinking blood vessels. This lessens swelling and tightens the skin around the eyes.
  5. Protection: When applied topically, green tea offers protection from UVB radiation. In one study, pre-treatment of skin with green tea extracts led to fewer sunburns after exposure to solar radiation. Green tea is an excellent choice for protection against sun-induced DNA damage and photo-aging.
  6. Exfoliating: Using a scrub containing green tea extract allows for gentle, detoxifying exfoliation. Removing the upper layer of dead skin will leave your skin feeling soft and rejuvenated.
  7. Anti-aging: Green tea protects your skin from the harmful effects of free radicals. Using products rich in green tea can prevent such damage, and minimize premature aging.
  8. Oil reducing: Those who suffer from oily, acne-prone skin can turn to green tea for relief. It reduces the redness and irritation that results from clogged pores. There is some evidence that the polyphenols in green tea can also reduce sebum production, making it a potential treatment for acne.
  9. Skin-soothing: Green tea extracts can help soothe and calm irritated skin.
  10. Relaxing: For maximum health benefits, try drinking matcha green tea. When you drink matcha tea, you ingest the powdered tea leaf, not just the brewed water. One cup of matcha tea can have up to 10 times more nutrients than regular green tea! L-Theanin, an amino acid found in green tea, can help calm anxiety and enhance mental performance. This is why drinking green tea gives you a relaxed feeling without making you drowsy.
