Vaginal Rejuvenation Explained (Part II)

When I began researching vaginal rejuvenation I didn’t realize how many options there were. There are many definitions and services for vaginal rejuvenation and the trend is gaining ground. Some gynecologists offer rejuvenation services while cosmetic surgeons handle the rest.

Who Needs Vaginal Rejuvenation

Every woman is a candidate for vaginal rejuvenation at almost any age. Since every woman is dealing with their own unique issues, there seems to be something for just about everyone. Some women want to cosmetically change the shape of their vulvovaginal area to make it more symmetrical or reshape the labial folds. Other women experience painful intercourse due to dryness or suffer from incontinence from pregnancy or aging. These issues can be extremely frustrating and can wear down one’s self-confidence, not to mention negatively impact a relationship with a sexual partner. These days, it’s easier than ever to make positive changes that can radically improve your life.

Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgical Procedures

When reviewing potential choices, note that anything that ends with -plasty or -ectomy is a surgical procedure. “-plasty” means “to shape or restore”. “-ectomy” means “to remove”.

Vaginoplasty This treatment tightens the vaginal opening and canal by removing excess vaginal lining tissue along with tightening the surrounding musculature and soft tissue of the perineum.

Labiaplasty This procedure focuses on the “lips” surrounding the vagina and aims to make the labia smaller and more symmetrical. Labiaplasty is often combined with hood-reduction surgery.

Hoodectomy Also known as clitoridotomy or clitoral unhooding, this surgical procedure reduces the size of the clitoral hood to further expose the clitoral glans. This is typically done as an elective procedure to improve sexual function. This is because having a thicker hood can affect sensation and orgasm.

Monsplasty Also, known as the “pubic lift”, this procedure focuses on the Mons Pubis (pubic mound). The mons is the area directly above the vulvovagina. In this monsplasty video you can see how it typically involves removing fatty tissue and excess skin that sometimes causes a bulge in this area.

Then, there is also the Mommy Makeover which is a combination of a breast lift, tummy tuck and Brazilian Butt Lift.

Non-Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation and Tightening

These options are usually less expensive with little-to-no downtime. They are a welcome addition to traditional surgical options. Energy-based treatments fall under two categories, radio frequency (RF) and CO2 laser. Similar to a microwave, RF technology uses electromagnetic waves to deliver focused heat to vaginal tissue.

FemiLift Energy-based, non-invasive. Femilift is a CO2 laser treatment that uses a controlled beam to heat the inner layers of vaginal tissue. The application of intense heat is said to stimulate the regeneration of elastin and collagen. This can thereby improve the function of the entire vagina by normalizing blood flow, increasing lubrication, and strengthening vaginal walls.

Thermiva This treatment uses radio frequency (RF) technology. Its main function is to stimulate collagen which will increase elasticity and firmness. It’s quick, painless, and the results last up to a year.

O-Shot Minimally-invasive since it’s an injection. Basically, they draw your blood, spin it in a centrifuge and extract out your plasma. Then they inject the vaginal area with the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to stimulate new tissue growth.

Kegels You can start your rejuvenation journey right now at home with kegel exercises. These exercises strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor which surround the vagina. Daily practice can lead to increased tightness and more pleasurable intercourse.

Where to Go for Vaginal Rejuvenation

Medical spas are a great option if you’re looking to visit one location that offers multiple treatments. Most spas offer laser-based tightening options while others offer injectables and surgeries. There are several good options to choose from, so I found a few in various parts of the country to get you started:

San Francisco, CA: The V Suite offers several treatments including a labiaplasty which enhances the shape and function of the labia. As a bikini waxer, I’ve had countless women complain about the appearance and size of their labia and wished for a service like labiaplasty.

Austin, TX: The Vaginal Rejuvenation Center of Austin offers the MonaLisa Touch which is a CO2 laser treatment that revitalizes the tissue inside and offers beneficial results, such as improving incontinence, vaginal atrophy, lubrication, sensation and ability to orgasm. You can get a good sense of the laser procedure in this video.

New York, NY: VSpot Medi Spa has the thermal treatment called FemiLift along with a variety of other services. I found this video with Kelly Deadmon to be really fun and interesting.

Miami, FL: Rotemberg Plastic Surgery offers many of the same services listed above, including the Mommy Makeover and other corrective gynecological treatments.

Phew! There are a multitude of options out there, so it all depends on what you want to achieve. For vaginal tightening, you could start with something free and simple like doing kegel exercises 3-5 times a day. For faster results, you could sit on the Emsella chair, dubbed as the “Kegal Throne”. Regardless, it’s great that these topics are out in the open and we can talk with our gyn’s or plastic surgeons about choices.
